New Delhi, October 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

More than 60 people were detained during protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Saturday, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, according to Delhi Police.

Police officials said around 60 to 70 protesters were detained during the demonstration, while some police personnel sustained minor injuries in a scuffle with agitators.

The protest was attended by senior advocate and MP Kapil Sibal, political activist Yogendra Yadav and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan.

Earlier, Delhi Police had said that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, remained in force across the New Delhi district and that no permission had been granted for a protest on October 3.

In a post on X, the New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police said the restrictions were in place to ensure public safety, maintain law and order, and facilitate smooth traffic movement. The order prohibited unauthorised gatherings, public speeches, slogan-shouting, processions, demonstrations and sit-ins.

Police had urged citizens to comply with the restrictions, warning that violations could invite legal action.

Protests had also taken place at Jantar Mantar on Friday, despite the prohibitory orders. More than 1,000 protesters, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and members of Left-wing student organisations such as the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), were detained.

Delhi Police registered at least three FIRs in connection with Friday’s demonstrations — two at Parliament Street police station and one at Connaught Place police station. The cases were registered under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant.

Officials said no individual or organisation had been specifically named as an accused in the FIRs, although details of the organisers and groups that proposed or participated in the demonstrations had been included in the complaints.
