Uncapped Indian fast bowler Auqib Nabi has joined Surrey for a three-match stint in the County Championship following his maiden India call-up.
The 29-year-old pacer will represent the English county side in matches against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan, beginning with Yorkshire at The Oval on September 2. He will then feature against Sussex in Hove on September 8 before returning to The Oval for the clash against Glamorgan on September 15.
Nabi’s move to Surrey comes after his impressive run in Indian domestic cricket. He claimed 60 wickets during the Ranji Trophy campaign that helped Jammu and Kashmir secure their maiden title and has taken 100 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons.
He had recently received his first India call-up as a replacement for injured fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the Test series against Sri Lanka. Nabi did not make his international debut, with India opting for two pacers in both matches.
The Surrey stint will provide Nabi with an opportunity to gain experience in English conditions. A source familiar with the development had earlier told IANS that the Indian team management and selectors were also keen to assess his ability to swing the ball in England, given the conditions expected during India’s upcoming Test assignment in New Zealand.
Nabi, who has secured his UK visa, is expected to return in time for India A’s matches against Australia A, beginning September 22.
“It’s an honour to join Surrey, one of the best Clubs in England. I’m looking forward to learning from the group and helping them for the next three matches,” Nabi said.
Surrey men’s cricket director Alec Stewart said the club had strengthened its bowling options because of a demanding schedule featuring six matches in six weeks, with limited recovery time and international commitments.
Nabi also made headlines in the 2025 Duleep Trophy after taking four wickets in four balls for North Zone. He was subsequently signed by Delhi Capitals in 2026 and played five matches for the franchise.
