Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday that Iran does not seek war but will respond firmly and decisively to any act of aggression, according to a statement issued by his office.
“We do not seek war, and this is a clear message that we have so far conveyed to the world. However, we will never sit still in the face of aggression and will give a decisive response to aggressors,” Pezeshkian said.
He stressed that instability and unrest in the region would serve the interests of no country and could create challenges for all regional states. Pezeshkian called for greater cooperation among countries in the region to safeguard security and promote development, Xinhua news agency reported.
His remarks came after US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Tim Hawkins said US forces had struck two launchers on Iran’s southern Larak Island on Sunday. According to Hawkins, the launchers were targeted after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC said in a statement following the attack that several military personnel and civilians were killed or wounded. It also vowed that the strike would be met with “punishment for the aggressor”.
A day earlier, Pezeshkian said a peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the United States was in the interests of Iran, West Asia and the wider world.
Speaking at a ceremony in Tehran, he said implementation of the MoU would prevent the United States and Israel from creating what he described as chaos, aggression and insecurity in the region, allowing regional countries to pursue stability and development.
Pezeshkian also called for Muslim countries to strengthen unity and solidarity to thwart what he termed the “enemies’ sinister plots”.
Reiterating Iran’s position on conflict, he said Tehran had never been the side to initiate a war.
“We do not welcome war, but will stand strongly against any aggressor, and no power can force a nation that is standing with all its might and will into surrender,” he said.
