Four people, including the driver, were killed and 11 others injured when a speeding sleeper bus travelling from Kanpur to Indore crashed into a bridge wall in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district on Friday morning, police said.
The accident took place around 8.30 a.m. on the Bhopal bypass bridge in Biaora when the bus lost control while negotiating a curve and rammed into the bridge wall, Rajgarh Superintendent of Police Amit Tolani said.
“The prima facie reason appears to be speeding. The bus lost control at the curve and collided with the bridge wall. The exact circumstances are being investigated,” Tolani said.
The impact shattered windows in the upper-deck sleeper section of the bus, causing some passengers to fall from the bridge while others landed on the bridge structure. The vehicle was severely damaged in the crash.
Police personnel and local residents launched a rescue operation and helped pull passengers trapped inside the mangled bus to safety.
All the injured were initially taken to the Civil Hospital in Biaora for treatment. Four passengers were reported to be in critical condition and were referred to Bhopal for further medical care, Tolani said.
“We are also in the process of identifying the deceased,” the police officer said.
According to police, two of those killed were a Station House Officer (SHO) and a cyber inspector from Bengaluru. Their identities were being ascertained.
Police and administrative teams reached the accident site soon after the crash and coordinated the rescue operation. The accident triggered panic among passengers and local residents as the injured were evacuated from the damaged bus.
Minister of State Narayan Singh Panwar and SP Tolani later visited the Civil Hospital in Biaora to meet the injured passengers. They also spoke with doctors about their condition and the treatment being provided.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the bus losing control on the bridge.
