Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday said the state government was making every effort to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag and assured the Assembly that anyone found responsible for wrongdoing would face strict legal action.
Making a statement on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of the Tripura Assembly, Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the state police had launched a detailed investigation into the death of the senior IPS officer.
The probe is being monitored by Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper, while the investigating team has already travelled to Delhi as part of the inquiry, he said.
Saha told the House that investigators would examine post-mortem and forensic reports, digital evidence, mobile call records, electronic devices, CCTV footage, documents and other relevant material to establish the circumstances and reasons behind Anurag’s death.
“If anyone is found to have committed any illegal act in connection with the DGP’s death, strict action would be taken as per law,” the Chief Minister said.
He also appealed to people and political parties to avoid speculation until the investigation is completed.
The statement came amid heated exchanges in the Assembly, with Opposition Congress and CPI-M members alleging that the government was not permitting a discussion on the death of the police chief.
Anurag, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the washroom attached to his official chamber at the state police headquarters in Agartala on July 20. He had assumed charge as Tripura DGP on May 17, 2025, after serving as Director General of Police (Intelligence).
Acting DGP G.S. Rao constituted a three-member investigation team on July 24, headed by West Tripura district Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak. The team was subsequently expanded to 10 members under Pathak’s leadership.
The reconstituted team includes senior officers from the West Tripura district police and Crime Branch, along with officers from the Cyber Crime Police Station, Amtali Police Station and West Agartala Women Police Station. Officers in charge of the Battala and Ramnagar police outposts, an Inspector from the KTD Singh Police Training Academy and the previous investigating officer, Subhojit Deb, are also part of the team.
The Congress, CPI-M, CPI and other political parties have been demanding a judicial inquiry monitored by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death. The Left parties and Congress have also held separate protests seeking such an investigation.
Anurag’s tenure as Tripura DGP was scheduled to continue until May 17, 2027.
