US President Donald Trump has said the war with Iran could end “fairly soon” while claiming that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is alive but has suffered serious injuries.
Speaking to conservative broadcaster Glenn Beck, Trump said he did not believe Khamenei was dead and claimed the left side of the Iranian leader’s body, including his arm and leg, had been badly wounded. Trump provided no independent evidence for the claim.
“I don’t think he’s dead. He was very seriously wounded,” Trump said, adding that Iranian officials continued to refer to consulting the supreme leader before taking important decisions.
Trump also claimed that US forces had destroyed 22 boats overnight as part of operations linked to the naval blockade and praised the US Navy and military. He predicted that the campaign would soon deliver what he described as a major victory.
The US President said Iran had been severely weakened, claiming its navy and air force had been destroyed and that the country was facing economic difficulties, including rising inflation.
Trump also said the Strait of Hormuz was functioning after what he described as the removal of mines, claiming that large quantities of oil were moving through the strategic waterway. Independent reporting has questioned the extent of oil flows through the strait amid the conflict.
Preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, Trump said, remained the central objective of the US military campaign.
Trump also linked the conflict to energy prices, saying the fighting had forced his administration to take what he called a “detour” but asserting that prices were now falling rapidly.
Earlier in the interview, Trump said US action against Iran “will be ending fairly soon”, although he has separately said he has no fixed timetable for negotiations and is not in a hurry to reach a deal.
Trump also defended his first-term decision to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
