The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Department on Thursday confirmed that 110 citizens from Nagpur district who travelled to Nepal with the Shri Swami Maharaj group are safe in Kathmandu and arrangements are being made for their return to India.
The group, comprising mostly senior citizens, reached Kathmandu on August 22 for a tourism and religious visit. Officials said the flash floods that hit Nepal on August 26 did not affect the group and authorities remain in regular contact with them.
According to the Nagpur District Administration, all 110 members are staying safely at the Maheshwari Samaj facility in Kathmandu, where the Nepal administration is providing necessary assistance.
Nepalese authorities have arranged alternative bus transportation for their return. The group left Kathmandu on August 27 for Janakpur, near the Nepal-India border, and is expected to reach there early on August 28.
From Janakpur, the group will cross into India and travel to Patna. A train from Danapur railway station to Nagpur has been arranged for August 28.
The district administration is coordinating with the families of the travellers in Nagpur, who have confirmed that the group members are safe. Ankush Ludekar of Premnagar, Itwari, and Ashitosh Choudhary of Manewada are among those maintaining regular communication with officials.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also spoke to the stranded citizens and assured them of all possible assistance for their safe return.
The Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X that all 106 passengers from Nagpur had departed Kathmandu for Danapur. Following Fadnavis’ telephone call, Nepal MP Sandeep Rana arranged four local mini-buses to transport them from Kathmandu to Janakpur.
The passengers are expected to reach the Janakpur-Bihar border on August 28, after which buses will take them to Danapur. Their onward journey to Nagpur by train has also been arranged.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said several Maharashtra residents, particularly from Satara, Mahabaleshwar and Pune, were stranded in Nepal. Officials were making continuous efforts to establish contact with them and facilitate their safe return.
Describing the situation in Nepal as tragic and unfortunate, Shinde said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended assistance to Nepal at the Central level.
He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts during emergencies and said the Central Government, Maharashtra Government, State Disaster Management Authority and Shiv Sena’s disaster management team were working together to assist stranded citizens.
Efforts to reach affected Maharashtra residents and provide them assistance are also being coordinated through Shiv Sena workers based in Nepal.
