The ongoing Exercise MAITREE-XV between the Indian Army and Royal Thai Army is focusing on strengthening joint combat capabilities, with troops undertaking tactical drills, UAV-supported operations, counter-IED training and other exercises, the Indian Army said on Thursday.
The Indian Army’s Eastern Command said the bilateral exercise was progressing in full swing in Thailand, with the participating troops working to enhance interoperability, trust and operational coordination.
“Indian Army and Royal Thai Army troops are honing joint combat skills through tactical drills, UAV-supported operations, counter-IED training and martial-arts exchanges,” the Eastern Command said in a post on X.
The Indian Army contingent had departed for Thailand on August 17 for the 15th edition of the exercise, which began on August 18 and will continue until August 31 at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani.
Both sides have fielded 85 personnel each. The Indian contingent is primarily drawn from the 9 Gorkha Rifles, while the Royal Thai Army contingent comprises personnel from the 3rd Battalion of the 25th Infantry Brigade of the 5th Division.
The exercise involves company-level joint training for operations in jungle and semi-urban environments. It includes field training, combat discussions, lectures, demonstrations and a final validation exercise.
An official said the exercise would allow both armies to exchange operational experience, identify best practices and develop techniques to address emerging challenges.
The training is also aimed at enhancing combined capabilities for joint Counter-Insurgency/Counter-Terrorism operations under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, including in international peacekeeping missions.
The participating contingents are also showcasing contemporary equipment and technologies used during joint operations.
Instituted in 2006, Exercise MAITREE is an important platform for strengthening military cooperation between India and Thailand. The previous edition was held at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya, in September 2025.
The exercise comes against the backdrop of security challenges faced by both countries. Thailand has experienced recurring insurgency-related attacks in its southern provinces bordering Malaysia, targeting both security personnel and civilians.
The ongoing drills are intended to deepen mutual understanding and military interoperability while further strengthening the longstanding defence relationship between India and Thailand.
