Uzma Khan, sister of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has approached the Supreme Court again, seeking an early hearing of a contempt petition over the alleged non-implementation of the court’s August 18 order directing authorities to transfer the jailed former premier to Shifa International Hospital.
Uzma filed the fresh application after the Supreme Court scheduled the contempt petition for hearing on September 16. Citing Imran Khan’s deteriorating health condition in prison, she said the matter concerns his life and health and therefore requires urgent consideration, Geo News reported.
In her plea, Uzma alleged that the Supreme Court’s August 18 order was deliberately not implemented and that Imran Khan was instead taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
She urged the apex court to ensure compliance with its earlier order, arguing that the continued failure to implement the directive amounted to a deliberate violation of the law.
The fresh application came after the Supreme Court Registrar’s Office rejected an earlier request on August 25 seeking an urgent hearing. Uzma has now requested that the contempt petition be taken up during the current week or the following week.
According to The Express Tribune, she described the continued non-compliance with the court’s directions as “wilful, blatant and contumacious”, asserting that the issue directly concerns Imran Khan’s fundamental rights, life, health and physical well-being.
On August 18, the Supreme Court had directed authorities to transfer Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital and facilitate weekly meetings between him and his family.
Imran Khan has remained in prison since August 2023 following convictions that his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has described as politically motivated. Since his removal as Prime Minister through a no-confidence vote in 2022, he has faced multiple cases, including those concerning state gifts and an unlawful marriage.
Last month, UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment Alice Jill Edwards raised concerns over reports about Khan’s detention conditions and alleged lack of adequate medical care. She urged Pakistan to ensure humane detention conditions and allow him access to medical examination and treatment of his choice.
