US President Donald Trump said Washington had offered Nepal all assistance needed as devastating floods along the Nepal-Tibet border left several Americans affected and others unaccounted for.
“We’ve called Nepal and offered any help that they need,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday, describing the disaster as “brutal”.
The US State Department said about 90 Americans may have been affected by the floods. As of 8 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, three American citizens had been safely rescued and no US citizen deaths had been reported.
The US embassies in Nepal and China were working with local authorities and tour operators to assist Americans in affected areas, while Nepal-led search-and-rescue operations continued.
The State Department has deployed a disaster response adviser and announced $500,000 in emergency assistance through Catholic Relief Services. The funding will support emergency shelter, relief supplies, and water, sanitation and hygiene services for communities affected by the floods.
Indian-American lawmakers Raja Krishnamoorthi and Suhas Subramanyam separately urged the State Department to intensify efforts to locate missing Americans and coordinate closely with Nepalese authorities.
Krishnamoorthi said reports that US citizens remained unaccounted for were “deeply troubling” and called for every available resource to be used in search-and-rescue operations.
Subramanyam said several constituents from Northern Virginia were among those affected, including community leaders who had travelled to the Himalayas for spiritual purposes. His office was maintaining contact with the State Department and assisting families seeking information.
The State Department advised Americans in affected areas to monitor local news, follow instructions from authorities and enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program.
The Nepal-Tibet border region is frequented by travellers and pilgrims heading towards Mount Kailash. The area is particularly vulnerable during the June-September monsoon season, when flash floods, landslides, damaged roads and difficult terrain can hamper rescue and evacuation efforts.
