Actress Kriti Sanon marked Raksha Bandhan with a social media post featuring her and sister Nupur Sanon, appearing to respond to the controversy surrounding her attire in a recent jewellery advertisement.
Kriti shared a picture of the sisters’ hands with rakhis tied around their wrists on Friday. Without directly referring to the criticism, she took a subtle swipe at those debating her outfit, writing, “While the Rakhi fashion committee is still in session…We’re focusing on what really matters. Happy Rakhi to all.”
The post drew supportive reactions from several social media users, with some praising the actress for standing by her choice and highlighting different ways of celebrating festivals.
The controversy began after Kriti appeared in an advertisement for jewellery brand GIVA ahead of Raksha Bandhan, wearing an off-white ensemble comprising a bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt. A section of social media users criticised the outfit, arguing that it was inappropriate for the festival and inconsistent with Indian traditions. The advertisement was subsequently withdrawn by the brand.
Kriti had earlier addressed the backlash in a social media note, arguing that the essence of a festival lies in its emotions and traditions rather than clothing.
“The essence of festivals is not in the clothes you wear, it is in the emotions and meaning you hold for the traditions,” she wrote.
She described Raksha Bandhan as a bond of protection and said she and Nupur tie rakhis to each other because they believe they can protect one another just as brothers and sisters traditionally do.
Kriti also said their prayers for each other’s health, happiness and long life extend to their dogs, whom they consider family.
Her latest Raksha Bandhan post similarly shifted the focus away from the fashion debate and towards the relationship the festival celebrates.
