The Rajasthan government has temporarily suspended the pilgrimage to the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal under the Chief Minister’s Senior Citizen Pilgrimage Scheme, citing the recent natural disaster and challenging conditions in the neighbouring country.
Devasthan Minister Joraram Kumawat said the decision was taken on the directions of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, with air travel to Kathmandu suspended for five days from August 27 to August 31.
The government said the move was primarily aimed at safeguarding the health and security of senior citizens undertaking the pilgrimage.
Kumawat said the recent tragedy in Nepal had affected local conditions and infrastructure, potentially creating risks and inconvenience for elderly pilgrims.
He said the suspension was a precautionary measure and that the government was closely monitoring developments in Nepal before deciding when the pilgrimage could resume.
The minister reassured senior citizens and their families that the suspension was temporary and urged them not to be disappointed.
The Devasthan Department is monitoring weather conditions, infrastructure and security arrangements in Nepal, he said.
Kumawat added that the pilgrimage would be rescheduled once conditions returned to normal and were deemed safe for travel. Necessary arrangements would be made to ensure eligible senior citizens could undertake the pilgrimage with adequate safety measures.
He reiterated that the temporary suspension reflected the state government’s priority of ensuring the safety, comfort and well-being of elderly pilgrims participating in the scheme.
