One labourer was killed and three others injured after a two-storey building collapsed during demolition work in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area on Friday, police said.
The incident was reported at around 11:15 a.m. from Pyare Lal Road in Regarpura, following which police and fire services personnel reached the site and launched rescue operations.
According to preliminary inquiries, the building was being demolished by a private contractor hired by its owners. Officials said no permission for the demolition had been obtained from the concerned agency.
Four labourers working at the site were trapped when the structure suddenly collapsed. One of them, identified as Sheikh Shamshad, died from his injuries. His body was shifted to the mortuary at Lady Hardinge Medical College Hospital.
Among the injured, Md. Ayub suffered a head injury and a fracture of his right hand. He was referred to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and was reported to be in critical condition.
Another worker, Sheikh Saidul, suffered limb injuries and is undergoing treatment at Jeevan Mala Hospital. Rafik-Ul, who sustained minor injuries, subsequently returned to his residence.
The building owners and the contractor have been detained for questioning. Police said further legal action would be taken under the appropriate provisions after verification of the facts and assessment of the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
The incident comes weeks after another building collapse in Delhi. At least three people were killed and one injured when an under-construction building collapsed in Rohini Sector 16 following heavy rainfall.
During the rescue operation in that incident, 42-year-old Ram Kishore was pulled from the debris and later declared dead at a hospital. Another labourer, 35-year-old POP worker Ravi, was rescued safely. The building owner, Ram Dua, was suspected to be trapped under the rubble, while some labourers were also feared trapped. Delhi Police subsequently registered a case against the owner.
