Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki, a celebrated name in South Indian cinema, died on Friday at the age of 94, prompting tributes from actors Jr NTR, Vishnu Manchu and director-choreographer Prabhu Deva.
Jr NTR expressed his grief in a post on X, formerly Twitter, remembering Janaki for her distinctive contribution to Telugu and Indian cinema.
“The news of the passing of Shaukaru Janaki Garu, who left her unique mark in Telugu and Indian cinema, has caused immense sorrow. Janaki Garu’s cinematic journey and the characters she portrayed will forever remain in our memories,” he wrote, while offering condolences to her family.
Vishnu Manchu also paid tribute to the veteran artiste, describing her as a legendary figure whose grace, dignity and body of work would continue to inspire generations.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Sowcar Janaki garu. Her grace, dignity and remarkable body of work will live on for generations,” he wrote.
Prabhu Deva paid his respects with a brief message: “RIP, Sowcar Janaki Amma.”
Actor Kayal Devaraj also shared details about the actress’s death, stating that she passed away at 1.59 p.m. on Friday. Born Sankaramanchi Janaki, she was widely known as Sowcar Janaki and had been hospitalised in Chennai after developing age-related health complications.
According to the details shared by Devaraj, Janaki’s career spanned seven decades and around 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema. She was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2022 for her contribution to Indian art and cinema.
Janaki is survived by her husband, Sankaramanchi Srinivasa Rao, three children — Yagna Prabha Koty, Venkataramana Sankaramanchi and Sachi Rao — and four grandchildren: Vaishnavi Aravind, Dev Prasad Koty, Dr Sanjai Rao and Rishi Sankaramanchi. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
