Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has cautioned members of Generation Z against allowing their growing social influence to turn into arrogance, saying such behaviour could quickly undermine the goodwill associated with the younger generation.
Abdullah made the remarks while sharing on X a video posted by verified handle DesiEco, purportedly showing an altercation between a young woman tourist and security personnel in Ladakh. The authenticity and circumstances surrounding the video were not independently established in the source material.
Drawing a comparison with the past, the J&K Chief Minister said some young people earlier used to invoke their parents’ status or influence when confronted with a situation.
“This ‘we are Gen Z’ has become the new ‘jaantay nahin ho mera baap kaun hai’,” Abdullah wrote. He added that the quickest way to erode the goodwill Gen Z enjoys would be to use its identity and influence as a threat whenever its members feel slighted.
In the video, the woman is purportedly heard objecting to the conduct of security personnel towards tourists and comparing it with alleged treatment of Kashmiris. She is also heard saying, “We are Gen-Z and we won’t tolerate this nonsense.”
Abdullah’s comments come amid growing global attention on Gen Z-led movements, which have increasingly used social media platforms, memes and decentralised networks to mobilise around issues including corruption, examination irregularities, economic inequality and censorship.
In India, recent Gen Z-led protests have also emerged around high-stakes examination paper leaks. Such movements have generated debate over the younger generation’s use of digital-first mobilisation, political slogans, irony and provocative language.
While supporters view these protests as expressions of demands for transparency and merit, critics have questioned their disruptive tactics and alleged influence of fringe groups.
