Ahmedabad City Police have arrested two men from Rajasthan for allegedly running a theft racket by advertising home cleaning services on Instagram and stealing jewellery from customers while visiting their residences under the pretext of providing cleaning work.
The arrests led to the detection of an undetected theft case registered at Bopal Police Station in Ahmedabad Rural, police said.
According to investigators, the accused promoted a cleaning service through social media platforms and approached customers by posing as professional cleaners. During visits to homes for cleaning assignments, they allegedly stole valuable items belonging to residents.
The suspects were apprehended by a Vadaj Police team during a patrol operation based on specific intelligence inputs. The action was carried out under the supervision of Ahmedabad Police Commissioner and senior officers from Sector-1, Zone-1 and B Division.
Police Sub-Inspector H.V. Gohil and his team identified and arrested the accused, who were subsequently linked to a theft case registered at Bopal Police Station under Sections 306 and 54 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The arrested accused have been identified as Arjun Devaji Kir (23), currently residing in Ahmedabad’s Memnagar area, and Nanu Shankar Kir (22), a resident of Vastrapur. Police said both accused originally belong to Kir Basti in Rajasthan’s Salumber district and were working in the cleaning sector.
Police recovered stolen gold ornaments worth around Rs 18.90 lakh from their possession. The recovered items include a gold chain, two gold bracelets, a mangalsutra, a necklace, four gold rings and a gold nose ring.
As per the police inventory, the recovered jewellery weighs more than 154 grams.
The case comes amid a series of investigations into crimes where accused persons allegedly used misleading identities and online advertisements to gain access to victims’ homes.
In another recent case, Vadaj Police had arrested a group accused of posing as home cleaning service providers through social media advertisements. That investigation led to the detection of theft cases registered at Sola and Vivekanandnagar police stations, with valuables worth around Rs 2.88 lakh recovered.
Police have also investigated other cases in Ahmedabad involving accused persons allegedly adopting fake identities, including impersonation of police officials to commit robberies.
