Poonch: Security forces launch search operation after suspected terrorist movement

Jammu, August 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Security forces launched a major search operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Tuesday following intelligence inputs about the suspected movement of terrorists at two locations in the remote Surankote area.

Officials said joint teams comprising the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Rashtriya Rifles troops initiated a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Dhara Sangla, Gujjar Naar and Kherowali Dhok areas, along with adjoining forest villages.

The operation is being conducted in the densely forested terrain of the region. Officials said no contact has been established with the suspected terrorists and there has been no exchange of fire so far.

“A systematic operation is going on to track the terrorists,” officials said.

Security agencies have intensified surveillance in several forested and mountainous areas of Jammu and Kashmir due to the challenges posed by difficult terrain and the possibility of militant movement through remote routes.

Meanwhile, an old rusted mortar shell was recovered from the courtyard of a house near the International Border in Kathua district on Tuesday morning.

Officials said the unexploded shell was found by labourers engaged in excavation work at the residence of Subash Chander in Kattal-Brahmana village under the Hiranagar sector. The workers noticed the suspicious object and informed the authorities.

A police team along with the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) reached the spot, secured the area and safely removed the mortar shell for disposal.

Security officials said the recovery of unexploded ordnance is not uncommon in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir due to decades of military activity, including artillery exchanges and ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border.

Several mortar shells fired during past confrontations fail to explode because of technical faults, soft terrain or fuse-related issues. Over time, such unexploded shells can remain buried under soil, vegetation or agricultural land and surface later due to environmental changes or human activity.
