Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and another was seriously injured after an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) allegedly opened fire inside a CRPF camp in Assam’s Nagaon district on Tuesday before allegedly shooting himself dead, officials said.
The incident took place at the 34 Battalion CRPF camp at Katimari, triggering panic within the high-security premises. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the sequence of events and the motive behind the firing.
According to preliminary information, the accused, identified as ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was on main gate duty when he was reportedly found without his assigned service weapon.
Officials said Premabaram later entered the camp’s guard room, took an INSAS rifle and moved towards the rear side of the Quarter Guard.
He allegedly first opened fire on Head Constable (HV/GD) Vishnu Prasad Baghel, who died on the spot. He then allegedly shot SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav, who had reportedly arrived at the camp for official document verification. Yadav also succumbed to his injuries.
The ASI allegedly fired at ASI/Mane Govind Sripul of the 171 Battalion, leaving him seriously injured. The injured officer was rushed to Dew Care Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Officials said Premabaram later entered the barracks of the 171 Battalion and allegedly shot himself with the same rifle, dying on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav, Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel and ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, who police said was the alleged shooter.
Senior CRPF officers and local police reached the camp soon after the incident. Security agencies have initiated a detailed inquiry to establish the circumstances leading to the shooting and ascertain its motive.
The investigation is underway, and further details are awaited.
