Media Access Concerns Surface in Pakistan Amid Reports of Restrictions Following PoK Coverage

New Delhi, August 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Concerns over press freedom and access to independent information have intensified in Pakistan after users reported being unable to access the website of international broadcaster Al Jazeera following its coverage of the ongoing unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Several users took to social media platforms to claim that the news outlet’s website had become inaccessible within Pakistan, prompting widespread debate over internet restrictions and the public’s right to receive independent news. While the reported restriction has not been officially confirmed by Pakistani authorities, it has fuelled speculation that the move may be linked to the broadcaster’s reporting on the situation in PoK.

The reported access issues come against the backdrop of escalating unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, where protests have continued for several days. Social media discussions have questioned whether international media coverage of the developments has triggered increased scrutiny from authorities.

Pakistani officials have previously criticised international media organisations over their reporting on sensitive domestic issues, alleging bias. The broadcaster, however, has consistently maintained its editorial independence.

Some social media users also alleged that sections of Pakistan’s military establishment were dissatisfied with the outlet’s reporting on PoK developments, though these claims remain unverified.

Meanwhile, the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir remains tense. According to claims circulating on social media, more than 50 people have been killed and hundreds injured during clashes between protesters and security forces over the past four days. The reported figures have not been officially confirmed by Pakistani authorities.

Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) member Sardar Umar Nazir Kashmiri alleged on social media platform X that security forces carried out a violent crackdown, claiming that “more than 50 of our people” had been killed while hundreds sustained injuries.

The JAAC also stated that demonstrations continued overnight across the Muzaffarabad region, with protesters demanding protection of fundamental rights and implementation of commitments previously made by local authorities.

The unrest has also drawn international attention. The US-based Human Rights Foundation (HRF) condemned reports of force being used against protesters and urged Pakistani authorities to end the crackdown, restore communication services and ensure accountability for any unlawful use of force.

Citing local civil society groups, the HRF alleged that Pakistani security forces opened fire on thousands of peaceful demonstrators. Pakistani authorities have not confirmed those allegations or the reported casualty figures in similar terms.

The reported media access restrictions, coupled with concerns over internet connectivity during the unrest, have further intensified debate over transparency, press freedom and access to independent information during periods of political tension.
