Several Hindu religious leaders on Friday criticised Independent MP from Purnia, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, for wearing saffron attire while staging a protest in Parliament over the alleged Ram Mandir donation theft case, describing the act as an insult to Sanatan traditions.
Sant Satyendra Das Vedanti alleged that some opposition leaders were attempting to defame Sanatan culture and urged the Union Government to take strict action against those responsible. He claimed that failure to act would encourage similar conduct in the future.
Swami Sachchidanand Maharaj of Chitragupt Peethadhishwar termed the incident “shameful” and said Parliament should not be used for actions that, in his view, insult saffron robes or Sanatan Dharma. He said the conduct of an elected representative should uphold the dignity of the House.
Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, General Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti, also criticised the protest, alleging that the Parliament complex had been misused to target Sanatan Dharma. Referring to the allegations related to the Ram Mandir donation case, he said legal proceedings should be allowed to take their course and maintained that the issue should not be used to disparage Hindu religious traditions or saints.
Mahant Raju Das of Hanumangarhi Temple in Ayodhya described the incident as unfortunate and questioned whether such conduct was appropriate inside Parliament. He also criticised the behaviour of some opposition leaders during the protest.
Ramadal Trust President Kalki Ram said saffron robes symbolise sacrifice and spiritual discipline in Sanatan Dharma and should not be used for political purposes. Mahamandaleshwar Vishnu Das Maharaj also objected to the use of saffron attire during the protest, alleging that it disrespected the religious significance attached to the robes.
Pappu Yadav had staged the protest in Parliament over the alleged Ram Mandir donation theft case. There was no immediate response from the MP to the remarks made by the religious leaders.
