A series of moderate earthquakes struck parts of China, Tibet and Nepal within a span of a few hours early Friday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The strongest tremor measured magnitude 4.5 and was recorded in China.
The NCS said the 4.5-magnitude earthquake occurred at 1:44:06 a.m. IST with its epicentre located at latitude 35.259°N and longitude 99.716°E at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Earlier, at 12:50:07 a.m. IST, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded in Tibet. The quake occurred at a depth of 90 kilometres with its epicentre at latitude 29.068°N and longitude 86.402°E.
The seismic activity continued with a magnitude 3.4 earthquake in Nepal at 1:18:42 a.m. IST. According to the NCS, the tremor originated at a depth of 15 kilometres near latitude 27.102°N and longitude 87.514°E.
The latest sequence followed another magnitude 4.3 earthquake that struck Tibet at 11:25:39 p.m. IST on Thursday. That quake originated at a depth of 130 kilometres with its epicentre at latitude 30.379°N and longitude 85.789°E.
The four earthquakes occurred between late Thursday night and early Friday morning across different parts of the Himalayan region and western China, with focal depths ranging from 10 kilometres to 130 kilometres.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage following the tremors. Authorities had also not issued any tsunami warnings or emergency advisories as of Friday morning.
The Himalayan region, encompassing Nepal, Tibet and adjoining parts of China, remains one of the world’s most seismically active zones due to the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, resulting in frequent earthquake activity.
