India’s weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu created history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Sunday by winning her third consecutive gold medal in the women’s 48kg category and setting new Commonwealth Games records in the snatch event.
The Olympic silver medallist overcame an early setback to deliver a commanding performance and become India’s first gold medallist at the Glasgow Games.
Mirabai missed her opening snatch attempt at 82kg but successfully cleared the same weight on her second try. She then lifted 85kg in her final attempt, breaking both the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records in the discipline.
Carrying an eight-kilogram advantage into the clean and jerk round after her record-breaking snatch performance, the Manipuri lifter faced another challenge after failing her first attempt. However, she responded strongly by lifting 105kg on her second attempt, securing the gold medal before the conclusion of the competition.
The victory marked Mirabai’s third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal. She had previously won the top honour at the 2018 Gold Coast Games and the 2022 Birmingham Games, further cementing her legacy as one of India’s greatest weightlifters.
Earlier in the day, India opened its medal account with Rishikanta Singh Chanambam winning silver in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event.
Rishikanta produced a record-breaking snatch lift of 121kg, surpassing the previous Commonwealth Games mark of 120kg. He followed it up with a 143kg clean and jerk lift to finish with a total of 264kg.
Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq claimed gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 273kg, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya secured bronze with a combined lift of 260kg.
