Rahul Gandhi Writes to Amit Shah, Seeks Accountability for Alleged Assault on Student Protesters

New Delhi, July 26, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking accountability for the alleged use of force against students during a protest in Delhi on July 20.

In his letter, Gandhi alleged that students demanding a “fair and accountable education system” were met with excessive force by security personnel, resulting in serious injuries.

He also expressed concern over the reported use of pellet guns during the protest, claiming that several protesters and a journalist sustained grave injuries. Referring to a student he had met, Gandhi said 19-year-old Sahil Lochab was likely to lose an eye after allegedly being hit by pellets.

Seeking clarification from the Home Minister, Gandhi asked whether the use of force, including pellet guns, had been authorised by the Union Home Ministry. He also questioned the identity and authority of individuals in plain clothes who were allegedly seen assaulting protesters with lathis during the demonstration.

Calling peaceful protest a cornerstone of democracy, Gandhi said it was the government’s responsibility to protect protesters and address their grievances through dialogue rather than force.

His letter comes a day after the CJP called off its protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar following the Centre’s acceptance of its key demands after multiple rounds of discussions.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda had announced that the government agreed to withdraw police cases filed against protesting students, provide written confirmation of the FIR withdrawals, and ensure the highest possible compensation for families of students who died in incidents linked to the alleged examination paper leak controversy.
