West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday reached a protest site in Kolkata on a scooter after learning that Trinamool Congress leaders Kunal Ghosh and Baishwanor Chatterjee had been detained by police.
Banerjee travelled to the Padmapukur area, where members of the Trinamool Congress student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), had gathered for a proposed march against the NEET question paper leak controversy. She later returned to her residence in Kalighat by scooter.
After reaching home, Banerjee, during a Facebook Live address, alleged that permission for the procession had been denied despite similar programmes being allowed for other political groups.
“Is Trinamool untouchable or not? Can the voice of Trinamool be silenced in this way?” she asked.
The TMCP, along with the party’s IT wing, had planned a march from Padmapukur to Moulali intersection through CIT Road. Trinamool supporters began assembling at the spot from noon, with party leaders including Dola Sen, Kunal Ghosh and Baishwanor Chatterjee present.
The Trinamool claimed that police had initially granted permission for the march but later withdrew it, citing unrest during a Left party protest held on Friday. The party approached the Calcutta High Court seeking permission for the procession, but the court dismissed the plea, citing the law and order situation.
Following the court’s order, police moved to clear the gathering, leading to a confrontation between Trinamool workers and security personnel. Kunal Ghosh and Baishwanor Chatterjee were detained during the incident.
Banerjee reached the spot along with Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien and interacted with party workers. She alleged that the police action was aimed at suppressing opposition voices, while police maintained that the gathering was unauthorised following the court order.
The situation led to temporary disruption of traffic in the area.
