Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Saturday was given the additional charge of the Ministry of Education following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the Union Council of Ministers.
The President’s office confirmed the decision through an official communique, stating that President Droupadi Murmu, on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accepted Pradhan’s resignation with immediate effect under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
Joshi, who currently holds the portfolio of Union Minister of Food and Consumer Affairs, will now oversee the Education Ministry as well.
The change comes amid widespread protests over alleged examination irregularities and paper leaks, which had placed the Education Ministry under intense scrutiny.
Pradhan’s resignation marks a major change in the Union Cabinet after a period of sustained student agitation demanding accountability over issues related to competitive examinations.
The President’s communique said the additional charge has been assigned to ensure continuity in the functioning of the Education Ministry without disruption.
Joshi, a senior Cabinet minister, will handle the Education portfolio temporarily until further decisions are announced regarding the ministry’s long-term leadership.
The government’s decision followed a period of heightened political and public pressure over examination-related concerns, with student groups demanding reforms and accountability.
