Senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh on Friday described Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation as a “victory of democracy” and alleged that corruption and irregularities had affected India’s education system for years.
Speaking to reporters in Gwalior, Singh claimed that the student movement over examination-related issues had highlighted long-standing concerns in the education sector. He also made allegations against National Testing Agency (NTA) chairman Pradeep Joshi, questioning his past appointments and tenure.
Singh said he had witnessed several irregularities while serving as chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education and alleged that the scale of problems in the system was extensive.
The Congress leader alleged that controversies had surrounded Joshi’s tenure at various positions, including the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) and Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission, before his appointment to the NTA.
Singh claimed that inquiries into alleged irregularities during Joshi’s tenure at the MPPSC had raised concerns, and alleged that subsequent controversies also emerged in other roles.
He further alleged that issues continued after Joshi took charge of the NTA, including the NEET paper leak controversy. Singh said he had questioned Joshi before the Parliamentary Standing Committee about examination irregularities and argued that responsibility should have been accepted if adequate authority was not available.
The Congress leader’s remarks came after weeks of student protests over alleged examination irregularities, which led to demands for accountability from the government.
