Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation should have come much earlier, questioning why the Centre delayed the decision despite mounting protests over alleged examination irregularities.
Speaking to reporters in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh, Yadav described the resignation as encouraging for students and the younger generation, claiming that people had welcomed the development with celebrations.
He said the government could have resolved the issue earlier by engaging with protesting students instead of prolonging the standoff. Referring to reports of student deaths linked to the agitation, Yadav questioned what he termed the Centre’s “stubbornness” in delaying talks.
Yadav also alleged that the government had acknowledged the examination paper leak by taking action against officials. He further remarked that the strength of the younger generation’s movement had compelled the government to respond.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra welcomed Pradhan’s resignation, saying it demonstrated that the voices of young people could not be suppressed.
Speaking to reporters in Wayanad, Kerala, Priyanka Gandhi alleged that the education system had been systematically influenced by the RSS and claimed that force had been used against those raising their voices in protest. She said she was happy that the country’s youth had asserted themselves and proved that their concerns could not be ignored.
Pradhan resigned amid nationwide protests over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including the controversy surrounding the May 3 NEET-UG paper leak.
