Television actress Samridhii Shukla has spoken out against traditional gender roles within families, saying household management and parenting should be shared equally between partners.
The ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ actress said women are often expected to shoulder the bulk of domestic responsibilities, regardless of whether they also have professional commitments.
According to Shukla, many women are expected to care for children, pursue careers if they choose to, and still oversee the smooth functioning of the household. She noted that even when cooking is handled by someone else, women are often expected to coordinate and manage everything at home.
Calling such expectations unfair, the actress said marriage is a partnership in which both individuals build a life together, share a home, and are equally responsible for raising their children. She stressed that responsibilities should be divided based on circumstances rather than fixed gender roles.
Shukla added that families should support each other’s ambitions and adapt roles when needed. She said that if a woman is recovering after childbirth, it is natural for her partner to take on more responsibilities outside the home. Likewise, when she is ready to return to work or pursue her goals, the husband can assume greater responsibilities at home.
Currently playing the lead role of Abhira in the popular television drama ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai,’ Shukla said her on-screen character reflects the pressures many women experience in balancing responsibilities at home and in their professional lives. She said the emotional burden of trying to excel in every role is a reality faced by many women.
