Romania on Saturday shot down a drone that entered its airspace near the border with Ukraine, marking the second such incident in as many days, President Nicusor Dan confirmed.
The drone was intercepted and destroyed about 10 km west of Sfantu Gheorghe in central Romania after it was detected by the country’s radar surveillance systems.
According to Romania’s Ministry of National Defence, the unmanned aircraft entered Romanian airspace without authorisation and flew along the border region with Ukraine. Two Romanian Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft were scrambled to intercept the target and carried out standard identification and neutralisation procedures before safely bringing it down in an unpopulated area near the border.
The ministry said the drone was shot down by the same F-16 pilot who had neutralised another drone over Buzau County on Friday.
The latest incident follows a similar airspace breach a day earlier, when Romanian forces destroyed a drone after it entered the country’s airspace near Padina in Buzau County. During that operation, an F-16 fired an air-to-air missile to bring down the drone in an uninhabited area. Two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft deployed under NATO’s Air Policing mission, along with two Romanian F-16s, had responded to the alert.
President Dan said authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the latest airspace violation and are working to establish the drone’s origin and identity. He noted that the drone was engaged only after it reached an unpopulated area, ensuring there was no risk to civilians.
