Former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Saturday said the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan marked a major victory for students and youth, and demanded that the Centre apologise for its handling of the protests over alleged examination irregularities.
Speaking to reporters in Chandigarh, Hooda alleged that the government had subjected protesting students to lathi charges and other excesses. He said the Centre owed an apology to the country’s youth and must ensure a transparent examination system to prevent future paper leaks.
Hooda claimed that recurring paper leaks had become a nationwide problem, forcing students to launch protests. He said the Congress, under the leadership of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, had supported the agitation through its “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign and would raise the issue of examination irregularities in Parliament.
The Congress leader alleged that around 7.5 crore candidates had been affected by repeated paper leaks under the BJP-led government. He also claimed that the problem extended beyond competitive examinations to recruitment tests, highlighting what he described as a severe unemployment crisis.
Referring to Haryana, Hooda alleged that more than 30 examination paper leaks had occurred during the BJP government’s tenure, citing several recruitment and competitive examinations as examples.
He further claimed that over 152 paper leaks had taken place across the country and alleged the existence of organised networks involved in leaking examination papers and recruitment scams. Hooda also referred to reports of student suicides linked to the NEET paper leak controversy, calling for urgent reforms to restore the credibility of the examination system.
