Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Siddaramaiah on Saturday welcomed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, describing it as a victory for students and youth who had protested over alleged irregularities in national entrance examinations.
In a statement, Siddaramaiah congratulated students across the country for what he called their determined and peaceful movement, saying the development marked a triumph of democracy and the Constitution.
He praised the protesters for continuing their agitation despite adverse weather, health challenges and alleged police action, and said their movement had inspired hope across the country.
The senior Congress leader also commended the role of the Congress and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, saying the party had fulfilled its responsibility by supporting the students’ agitation.
However, Siddaramaiah asserted that Pradhan’s resignation alone would not resolve the challenges facing the education sector. In an apparent criticism of the Narendra Modi-led Union Government, he alleged that deeper issues of governance and education policy remained unaddressed.
He further claimed that meaningful reforms in the education system would not be possible without a change in leadership at the Centre, accusing the government of commercialising education and undermining democratic institutions.
Siddaramaiah urged students and youth not to view the minister’s resignation as the conclusion of their struggle and called for continued efforts to hold the Union Government accountable. He said the Congress would continue to support movements aimed at protecting democracy and the Constitution.
