Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan on Saturday welcomed Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, describing the development as an example of democracy functioning through dialogue and public accountability.
Reacting to the resignation on X, Haasan said dissent should be addressed through discussion rather than confrontation and stressed that violence has no place in a democratic society.
“Glad to see dialogue replacing confrontation. Dissent deserves dialogue. This is democracy in action,” he wrote, while also calling for a fair examination of allegations of excesses during protests and accountability for all sides.
Haasan said the minister’s resignation represented a moment larger than the paper leak controversy that triggered the student movement over examination irregularities.
He called for the formation of a National Commission on Education and Examination Reform with a three-month roadmap to rebuild trust in the examination system, reduce academic pressure and modernise education.
The actor also highlighted Tamil Nadu’s concerns, referring to the death of student Anitha, whose case had earlier drawn attention to the pressures surrounding high-stakes competitive examinations.
“The government’s willingness to engage is welcome. Now let us ensure that dialogue leads to lasting reform,” Haasan said, adding that the path ahead required collective effort.
Pradhan’s resignation came after sustained protests over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The demonstrations intensified following police action against protesters in Delhi, which triggered wider public reactions.
Haasan urged that the current moment be used to bring long-term reforms rather than remain limited to a single political development.
