President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday praised the Indian community in Romania for preserving India’s cultural heritage and strengthening people-to-people ties, describing the diaspora as an important bridge between the two nations.
Addressing members of the Indian community and ‘Friends of India’ in Bucharest on the concluding day of her State Visit to Romania, the President said the close bond between the peoples of India and Romania remains the strongest pillar of bilateral relations.
Commending the contributions of the Indian diaspora, she said the community had played a significant role in Romania’s economy and society while also promoting Indian culture and values.
“I am delighted to see that the Indian diaspora community is united in keeping India’s cultural heritage vibrant in Romania. Your contributions to Romania’s economy and society, as well as your efforts in promoting Indian culture and values here, make you a true representative of India,” President Murmu said. She also encouraged the community to remain active partners in India’s development journey.
Earlier on Friday, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies conferred its highest academic honour, the Honorary Doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa), on President Murmu in recognition of her contributions to academia, public service and international cooperation.
Accepting the honour, she described education as the “single-most transformative force” in her life and said her personal journey from a modest village background to becoming the first girl from her village to attend college had reinforced her belief that education is the greatest equaliser.
She also called for deeper academic collaboration between Indian and Romanian educational institutions through joint research initiatives and faculty and student exchange programmes.
President Murmu arrived in Bucharest on Thursday on the final leg of her three-nation visit, aimed at enhancing India’s engagement with Eastern Europe.
