Singer-songwriter Katy Perry has criticised US President Donald Trump after her hit song Firework was used in a White House social media video featuring footage of US military strikes on Iran, saying she neither authorised nor supported its use.
A video posted on TikTok earlier this week paired scenes of the military operation with Perry’s 2010 chart-topping anthem. Reacting on X, the singer said she was “deeply appalled and angry” that the song had been used without her permission.
“I did not approve this, I was not asked, and I absolutely do not condone it,” Perry wrote.
She said Firework was created as “an anthem of hope, healing, and inner strength” and expressed disappointment that it had been used alongside footage of military action.
“To see a message of self-worth and upliftment weaponised to soundtrack destruction and violence is a complete violation of everything my song stands for,” she added.
Perry had previously performed Firework during the televised celebrations marking former President Joe Biden’s inauguration in January 2021.
She is the latest among several artists to object to the Trump administration’s use of their music in official social media content. Last month, singer Ariana Grande also criticised the use of her song Bye in a TikTok video promoting US immigration enforcement, stating that she did not want her music associated with such content.
