Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday assumed additional charge of the Ministry of Education following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the Union Council of Ministers.
The change comes amid growing scrutiny of the Education Ministry over nationwide student protests linked to alleged irregularities and paper leak allegations in competitive examinations.
According to an official communique issued by the President’s Secretariat, President Droupadi Murmu accepted Pradhan’s resignation on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with immediate effect under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
The President has assigned the additional responsibility of the Education Ministry to Pralhad Joshi, who is currently serving as the Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs. Joshi will continue handling his existing portfolio along with the new assignment.
Pradhan’s resignation marks a major change in the ministry’s leadership at a time when students and opposition parties have been demanding accountability over alleged examination-related irregularities.
Earlier, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and CJP leader Saurav Das appealed to protesting students to end their agitation, stating that the government had accepted key demands raised by them.
The government has made the interim arrangement to ensure continuity in the functioning of the Education Ministry and avoid any administrative disruption. Further decisions regarding permanent leadership arrangements are expected later.
The President’s communication stated that the changes took effect immediately, allowing a smooth transition in the ministry’s operations.
