Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday welcomed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and said the government should now focus on reforms in the education system and governance.
Speaking to reporters after Pradhan stepped down following a widespread student movement over examination-related issues, Wangchuk described the development as a victory for democracy and congratulated those who participated in the campaign.
“I congratulate all my fellow countrymen, this is a victory for democracy that we witnessed today,” Wangchuk said, while urging young people to continue safeguarding democratic values.
He thanked the youth, students, volunteers and members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement for raising the issue and appreciated protesters for maintaining peace during demonstrations.
Wangchuk, however, expressed concern over incidents of violence during the agitation and appealed to people to continue following the path of non-violence.
“There can be no weapon against peace and therefore please continue to maintain that,” he said, urging protesters to remain humble after the movement’s success.
The activist said the resignation was only the beginning and stressed that nation-building required broader reforms.
“While we have received a response, now focus should be on educational reforms as nation-building cannot take place with just one resignation,” he said.
Wangchuk expressed hope that the Union government would introduce changes not only in education but also in governance practices, adding that the country should move away from fear-based administration towards a system based on trust, compassion and truth.
He said he hoped corruption in all forms would be addressed and that India would emerge as a global example through genuine reforms.
