Will Accused in Sacrilege Cases Ever Be Punished, or Will There Only Be Summons and Hearings? – Giani Harpreet Singh

Chandigarh, July 16, 2026(Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar-Surjit) President Giani Harpreet Singh, in a written press statement, questioned whether those responsible for the sacrilege incidents, the Behbal Kalan firing, and the Kotkapura police firing case would ever be punished, or whether every new Special Investigation Team (SIT) would merely continue issuing summons and conducting hearings.

He recalled that during the Shiromani Akali Dal government in June 2015, copies of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji were stolen. In September that year, posters were openly pasted on walls challenging the Sikh community by threatening acts of sacrilege. Those behind the posters carried out their threats, and the series of sacrilege incidents began in October.

Giani Harpreet Singh stated that residents of Burj Jawahar Singh Wala had named followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda, Sirsa, as being involved, but they were not even questioned. Instead, the family of the village granthi and several Amritdhari Sikh youths were allegedly subjected to severe harassment. He further said that the then Punjab Home Minister, Sukhbir Singh Badal, had held a press conference claiming that foreign forces were behind the sacrilege incidents, but no one responsible was ever brought to justice.

He added that the Congress government led by Captain Amarinder Singh had promised justice and used that assurance to persuade protesters to end the Bargari Morcha, but failed to fulfil its commitment. According to him, Arvind Kejriwal later took political advantage of that unfulfilled promise by, along with Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, guaranteeing justice in the sacrilege cases and the Behbal Kalan firing within 24 hours. However, after more than four and a half years in power, that promise also remains unfulfilled, and yet another SIT has now been constituted, which is currently only issuing summons.

He questioned when this new SIT would complete its investigation, submit its report, and when action would finally be taken on its findings.

Giani Harpreet Singh said that previous SITs had already recorded statements and submitted reports, making it appear that the fresh round of summons was only delaying justice. He remarked that everyone knows justice delayed is effectively justice denied.

He urged the Punjab Government to act immediately on the basis of the reports already prepared by previous investigation teams if it is genuinely committed to delivering justice. Since the matter concerns the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal Guru of the Sikhs, he warned that the present government should remember the political fate of the two governments that preceded it.

The statement was released to the media by the party’s Media In-charge, S. Tajinder Singh Pannu.
