Vishnu Vaghela’s journey from a rural background in Gujarat to captaining India’s blind football team is a story of determination, resilience and an unwavering passion for the sport.
Vaghela, who lost his eyesight during childhood, did not allow the setback to derail his ambitions. He went on to establish himself as a prominent blind footballer, representing India at national and international levels and bringing pride to his family and his village in Banaskantha.
Vaghela has travelled to 10 countries for international competitions and has won the Best Player award on multiple occasions. He plays as a defender for India and as a striker for the Gujarat team. He has also won the Top Scorer award three times.
“I have travelled to 10 countries to play. I have also won the ‘Best Player’ title on two or three occasions. I play as a defender for the Indian team, while I play as a striker for the Gujarat team. I have also received the ‘Top Scorer’ award three times,” Vaghela said.
His father, Tejubhai Vaghela, recalled that his son travelled to several places before beginning his football journey in Ahmedabad, where he received encouragement and support from people around him.
The Blind People’s Association (BPA) in Ahmedabad played an important role in developing Vaghela’s abilities by providing access to training facilities and a sports ground.
BPA General Secretary Bhushan Punani said the organisation has a state-of-the-art football ground in Naz village, where a Premier League match has also been held.
“Today, thanks to Vishnu Vaghela’s courage, initiative, and determination, Gujarat has emerged as a leading state in the country for ‘Football for the Blind’,” Punani said.
Vaghela’s performances have also earned international recognition. He was named Best Player for his display against Brazil at the BRICS Blind Football Tournament in Moscow in 2025.
His achievements have made him an inspiration for aspiring differently-abled athletes and a symbol of Gujarat’s growing contribution to blind football in India.
