The torch of the Punjab Government’s ‘Khedan Vatan Punjab Diyan-2026’ received a warm welcome in Hoshiarpur on Sunday, with MLA Bram Shanker Jimpa joining players and sports enthusiasts in a march to the Indoor Stadium.
The torch was welcomed in the city by Jimpa, who later accompanied players in a procession to the Indoor Stadium amid drum beats. A district-level event was organised there to mark the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Jimpa said ‘Khedan Vatan Punjab Diyan’ was an important initiative to connect the state’s youth with sports and strengthen the sporting culture in Punjab. He said the participation of four generations in sporting competitions, along with the ‘Youth Connect’ initiative, was a distinctive feature of the event.
He said sports not only promote physical fitness but also help develop discipline, team spirit and positive thinking. Jimpa urged players, coaches and sports enthusiasts to participate enthusiastically in the upcoming competitions.
He said the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, was making continuous efforts to promote sports in the state.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said block-, district- and state-level competitions would be organised in Hoshiarpur under ‘Khedan Vatan Punjab Diyan-2026’, with events being held for different age groups. She said the torch would leave for Pathankot on August 24 via Mukerian.
Players who had performed exceptionally well in various sports were honoured during the event, while those present encouraged and applauded the athletes.
Mayor Praveen Saini, Senior Deputy Mayor Surinder Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Rakesh Kumar Meena, Hoshiarpur Cooperative Bank Chairman Vikram Sharma, SDM Parampreet Singh, Assistant Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur, District Sports Officer Surjit Singh, international bodybuilder Avtar Singh, councillors, players, sports enthusiasts and other dignitaries were also present.
