Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Sunday said the lyrics of the national song Vande Mataram signify devotion to “Bharat Mata” and should not be interpreted as direct worship of Hindu goddesses, amid a controversy over the rendition of its full version.
Speaking to reporters at an event in Haridwar, Ramdev said references to Bharat Mata in the song represent the country as a source of faith, knowledge, duty and empowerment.
“We regard Bharat Mata as Durga, as Lakshmi; she is our faith, our knowledge, our temple, and the one who protects and empowers us. She is supreme for us, and she is our ultimate object of devotion and aspiration,” he said.
Ramdev said those interpreting references in Vande Mataram as worship of particular deities or temples needed a better understanding of Sanskrit and Indian culture. He termed the attempt to portray the song as being directed against a particular religion as “intellectual bankruptcy”.
On student protests, Ramdev said minors should not be involved in demonstrations and claimed that children as young as five, seven and 10 were being brought into protests. However, he said people above 18 should speak up if they believe injustice is taking place.
He said protests against injustice should not be restricted by caste or community, adding that discrimination against members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as well as Brahmins was contrary to constitutional and democratic values.
Ramdev also praised Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami over the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state and said people across the country should have equal access to healthcare, education and constitutional rights.
Asked about recent remarks by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut advising him against speculating about her youth or private life, Ramdev declined to comment directly, saying he did not want to make remarks about people of her stature.
