Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Sunday said the state government has sanctioned 36,792 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) since 2024-25, with 17,000 already completed.
Sond said the government was working to ensure that economically weaker families, particularly those living in kuchha houses or vulnerable conditions, have access to safe and dignified housing.
Of the 36,792 houses sanctioned under PMAY-G, 17,000 have been completed with financial assistance of Rs 478.45 crore, while construction of the remaining 19,792 houses is underway, he said.
The minister said the housing initiative was aimed not only at constructing pucca houses but also at improving the living conditions and security of rural families.
Sond also highlighted a special housing package of Rs 360 crore sanctioned for families whose houses were damaged by floods in Punjab. Under the package, 30,000 damaged houses were targeted for reconstruction and repairs.
So far, 28,020 houses have been sanctioned under the flood-related package, while the first and second instalments of financial assistance have been transferred to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries, he said.
The minister reiterated that the Bhagwant Mann government was committed to ensuring that every eligible family received the benefits of housing schemes and that lack of financial resources did not prevent deserving beneficiaries from securing a safe home.
Highlighting the impact of the initiative, Pritam Singh, a resident of Machrai Kalan village in Fatehgarh Sahib district, said his family had earlier lived in a kuchha house where rainwater frequently entered during the monsoon.
He said the poor condition of the walls and roof had made the house unsafe, but financial assistance under the housing scheme enabled his family to move into a pucca home, providing greater security and relief.
