At least six people were injured and around 42,000 residents were ordered to evacuate as a rapidly spreading wildfire moved toward Reno in northwestern Nevada, near the Nevada-California border, officials said.
The Hawk Fire, which started on Saturday, had expanded to more than 13,000 acres (about 53 square kilometres) by Sunday and remained completely uncontained, fire officials said.
Three civilians and three first responders were among those injured. Another 45,000 people were placed under evacuation warnings, while several structures were destroyed in the blaze.
About 10,000 customers in Washoe County were without electricity on Sunday. Reno, the county seat and largest city in Washoe County, remained among the areas affected by the rapidly changing fire conditions.
Officials said the fire was exhibiting extreme behaviour, with strong winds driving flames rapidly through dry, light vegetation.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County on Saturday night and urged residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders and directions from local authorities.
“This is an active and rapidly evolving situation,” Lombardo said, adding that state agencies were working with local authorities and emergency responders to deploy available resources to protect lives and communities.
The governor reiterated on Sunday that the situation remained volatile and urged residents to stay vigilant and monitor official updates.
The wildfire comes amid a season of dangerous fire conditions across parts of the western United States.
Earlier in July, the Summit Fire in Southern California rapidly expanded to nearly 2,700 acres (about 10.9 square kilometres), prompting evacuations during a heatwave. The blaze was reported near Llano, close to the Los Angeles-San Bernardino county line.
