Iran has warned that vessels violating its protocols while transiting the strategically important Strait of Hormuz could face restrictions on future passages, including fines, detention or confiscation.
The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), which oversees maritime traffic through the waterway, issued the warning in a post on X and urged cargo owners shipping to and from the Persian Gulf to check its list of “Non-Compliant Vessels” before chartering ships.
The authority said the measure was intended to help cargo owners avoid potential difficulties arising from violations of Iranian transit protocols.
Separately, Hassan Qashqavi, spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said the panel had approved an article in a draft plan aimed at strengthening security in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to semi-official Fars news agency, the proposed measure would allow Iran to charge fees for services it provides in the waterway, including navigation, environmental protection, refuelling under special conditions, insurance and safety services.
The developments come amid heightened tensions involving Iran and the United States over the strategically vital waterway and Tehran’s nuclear programme.
US President Donald Trump recently referred to the Strait of Hormuz as “American territory” while reiterating that Iran would not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon. He did not provide a legal or territorial basis for the assertion.
Trump also said the US would have to focus on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, despite the impact of the conflict on his domestic economic agenda.
Iran tightened restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz on February 28, barring safe passage to vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States following joint strikes by the two countries on Iranian territory.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy route through which a substantial share of the world’s oil and gas supplies passes.
