Iran warns participation in US economic operation would be considered an ‘act of war’

Tehran, August 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Iran has warned that it would regard any country participating in or supporting a US-led economic campaign against Tehran as an “act of war”, amid escalating tensions between the two countries.

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, issued the warning in a social media post in response to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump.

“If the economic war continues, not a single drop of oil will be exported, neither through the Strait of Hormuz nor from anywhere in the Persian Gulf,” Rezaei said, warning that Iran would consider support for the US campaign an act of war.

Trump had announced what he described as the “most crushing economic operation ever taken” against countries providing Iran with a lifeline. He said the campaign would involve economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.

Rezaei had issued a similar warning in an interview with Iran’s state-run IRIB TV on Saturday, saying countries joining the US economic pressure campaign would be regarded as “enemies” by Tehran.

He said Iran would initially seek dialogue with such countries and urge them to stay out of the confrontation. However, if they refused, Tehran would target their interests, he warned.

Rezaei also said Iran would prevent oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz if neighbouring countries joined what he described as the US siege. He claimed that Tehran had developed ways to bypass US sanctions and continue selling oil.

The Iranian security official further said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless the United States fulfilled its commitments under a US-Iran memorandum of understanding signed in June.

On June 18, the two countries signed an MoU aimed at ending the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon. Negotiations toward a final agreement were scheduled within 60 days, but the talks remain uncertain following renewed escalation between the two sides last month.
