Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member Bansuri Swaraj on Tuesday accused the Opposition of adopting a “selective outrage” approach on examination paper leak cases, as the government faced criticism over the NEET-UG paper leak issue.
Speaking during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Swaraj said discussions on examination irregularities should be based on facts rather than political assumptions. She claimed that several paper leak cases had also been reported during the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
Responding to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s remarks on the NEET-UG investigation, Swaraj said that decisions on bail are taken by courts and not by the government. She emphasised that the judiciary functions independently of the legislature and executive.
Gogoi had questioned the progress of the NEET-UG paper leak probe in the Lok Sabha, citing media reports claiming that most of the accused chargesheeted in the case had secured bail.
Swaraj alleged that the Opposition was attempting to create an impression that examination leaks began only after 2014. She claimed that around 22 examination-related irregularities were reported during the UPA period and in opposition-ruled states.
Listing past cases, she referred to alleged irregularities in examinations including AIIMS-PG (2006), ICAI-CPT (2007), CLAT (2009), Railway Recruitment Board examinations (2009), AIEEE (2011) and SSC CGL (2013), stating that these occurred during the UPA regime.
She also cited alleged recruitment examination irregularities in Rajasthan, West Bengal, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh under previous state governments. Referring to Punjab, Swaraj alleged that a high-tech paper leak occurred in the Pharmacy Officer recruitment examination this year.
Questioning the Opposition’s criticism of the NDA government, she said the response to paper leak issues should not change depending on which political party is in power.
Targeting Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, Swaraj also asked whether he had demanded the resignation of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains while seeking accountability from the former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
