Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of a modern dog shelter in Dwarka, a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) project aimed at providing safe housing, medical care, sterilisation and vaccination facilities for stray dogs.
The facility, coming up at Sector-29, Dwarka, will be spread across approximately 6,050 square metres and will feature modern infrastructure focused on the welfare, rehabilitation and well-being of stray canines.
Sandhu, in a post on X, said the foundation stone was laid in the presence of Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi, Lok Sabha MP Ramvir Bidhuri, MLA Kailash Gahlot and other officials and guests.
The Lieutenant Governor said the project represents a public-private partnership initiative, with support from the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. The development is being carried out at no cost to the MCD, he added.
During his visit, Sandhu also inspected Delhi’s only cremation centre for small animals and stressed the need for greater participation from animal welfare organisations, veterinarians, dog lovers and experts in shaping future initiatives.
The move comes amid concerns over the large stray dog population in the national capital. Estimates suggest Delhi has between eight lakh and 10 lakh stray dogs under the MCD jurisdiction, while hospitals across the city report more than 25,000 dog bite cases annually.
Later in the day, Sandhu reviewed infrastructure development works at Aerocity near the Indira Gandhi International Airport. GMR officials briefed him on ongoing initiatives related to sustainable urban planning, water conservation, traffic management and last-mile Metro connectivity.
The Lieutenant Governor directed officials to maintain close coordination with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and ensure that green infrastructure and sustainability remain central to future development plans in the Capital.
