Filmmaker Karan Johar and choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan share a close friendship today, but their association began with a memorable professional disagreement during the making of the iconic film ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’.
An old clip from the chat show ‘Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai’ has resurfaced, featuring Karan and Farah discussing how she initially turned down an opportunity to choreograph a song from the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol-starrer.
Karan, who worked as an assistant director on the 1995 film, recalled that a scheduling issue involving choreographer Saroj Khan led the team to approach Farah for a song to be filmed in Switzerland.
He said Shah Rukh Khan, who had previously worked with Farah in ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’, suggested approaching her for the assignment.
However, Farah declined the offer because she was committed to shooting a Marathi film with actor Nana Patekar.
Karan said Farah’s decision left a strong impression on him because it demonstrated her professionalism and commitment to an existing assignment, even though ‘DDLJ’ was a major opportunity.
Eventually, Farah did become part of the film and choreographed the popular song ‘Ruk Jaa O Dil Deewane’.
Recalling the shoot, Farah said Karan was also part of the song and even tore his trousers during filming. Karan jokingly explained that he had “got a little too excited for the shot”.
Farah went on to choreograph several songs for Karan’s films, including ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998), ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001), ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ (2003) and ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ (2006).
Karan later appeared in a cameo in Farah’s directorial debut ‘Om Shanti Om’ (2007), further reflecting the long-standing professional association between the two.
