Chandigarh, June 19, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)
The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, on Thursday, lambasted the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab Government for its inefficiency in ensuring the procurement of the maize crop at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
“The MSP for the maize crop is Rs 2400 per quintal for 2025-26. However, farmers across the state are forced to sell their produce at distressed prices to the private players. Maize crops with high moisture content are being sold at prices as meagre as Rs 1300 per quintal, whereas the dried maize crops are being sold at Rs 1900 per quintal,” Bajwa added.
Senior Congress Leader Bajwa said that the AAP government’s main assembly election promise in 2022 was to ensure the procurement of maize crops at the MSP. However, the AAP government failed awfully to fulfil this commitment as it reneged on its other promises. The maize yield has never been procured at the MSP ever since the AAP got hold of power in Punjab.
Strongly demanding immediate procurement of the entire maize crop at MSP, the Bajwa said, “Failing to do so will undermine the Punjab government’s crop diversification programme.”
The Opposition Leader said that the government should compensate the farmers, who have already sold their maize crops to the private players at distressed rates and suffered losses.
Accusing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government of running away from its responsibilities Bajwa said that the CM in previous years encouraged farmers to grow moong crops and promised to procure it at MSP. However, his government never bothered to purchase the entire moong crop at MSP. The CM has again backstabbed the farmers.
