Delhi Police on Friday registered an FIR against unknown persons on a complaint filed by student Sahil Lochab, who alleged that he sustained pellet-gun injuries during a protest, following a sit-in by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police at Parliament Street Police Station.
Gandhi had staged the protest demanding registration of an FIR on Lochab’s complaint. The sit-in continued for around eight hours before police registered the case.
Speaking to reporters after the FIR was lodged, Lochab thanked Gandhi for intervening and said the Congress leader’s team had been in contact with him for about a month and that Gandhi had personally enquired about his health.
“I am thankful to Rahul Gandhi ji who sat here for eight hours following which this FIR was registered,” Lochab said.
He said that when Gandhi contacted him on Thursday, he informed the Leader of Opposition that his complaint had not been registered. Gandhi then asked him to meet him the following day and assured him that the FIR would be lodged.
Lochab also thanked people for praying for his recovery, saying he had been able to stand again despite having “200 pellets” lodged in his body. He described the registration of the FIR as “a victory for justice”.
At the same time, Lochab questioned why it took eight hours to register the case despite the presence of both the complainant and the Leader of Opposition. He said he had been visiting the police station repeatedly since August 14 to get the FIR registered.
“In fact, the FIR might not have been lodged if the LoP had not helped me,” he said, adding that the case was finally registered after seven to eight days.
Lochab said he had faith that Gandhi’s intervention would eventually lead to registration of the FIR. His mother also expressed gratitude to the Leader of Opposition for helping the family.
