A fresh clash between activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) broke out at Midnapore College in West Midnapore district on Friday, leaving several activists from both groups injured.
The confrontation came a day after two separate clashes between SFI and ABVP members at Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata, amid tensions over incidents reported on the campus.
The trouble at Midnapore College began during an SFI protest organised inside the campus against the alleged damage to an engraved emblem at JU. The emblem was designed by renowned artist Nandalal Bose and was reportedly damaged during Thursday’s clashes.
SFI West Midnapore district president Ranit Bera alleged that ABVP activists arrived at the protest carrying party flags and attacked students who were participating peacefully. He further alleged that some college teachers and support staff were also targeted.
ABVP national working committee member in charge of South Bengal, Arunava Dutta, rejected the allegation and offered a contrasting account of the incident.
Dutta alleged that SFI activists attacked ABVP supporters who had gathered peacefully on the campus to protest against the alleged assault on ABVP members at JU on Thursday. He claimed that around 12 ABVP supporters were injured and said the organisation had approached the police seeking action.
The latest confrontation follows two rounds of violence at JU, with the first reported during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday and another clash taking place on Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, JU authorities on Friday constituted a three-member committee to investigate the two consecutive clashes on the campus. The university also lodged a complaint with Jadavpur Police Station.
None of the three members appointed to the inquiry committee is associated with JU, according to the authorities.
